Today, we flew to this beautiful port city in the South of France and boarded the Costa Smeralda enroute to the Rome temple on Saturday. We flew from Paris Orly to Marseille after taking a very long walk from where the bus dropped us off to the checkin area. Our older group members shared taxis and were permitted to be let off directly outside the checkin area.
Marseille, a vibrant port city located in southern France, boasts a rich history and diverse culture. With a population of around 860,000 residents, it is the second-largest city in France after Paris. The city's history dates back to ancient times when it was founded by the Greeks in 600 BC, and it has since been shaped by influences from various civilizations, including Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman. As such it is the oldest city in France
Marseille's historical significance as a major Mediterranean trading hub has left it with a unique blend of cultures, reflected in its cuisine, architecture, and local traditions. The city is known for its bustling Old Port, or "Vieux-Port," which remains a center of activity, lined with cafes, markets, and historical landmarks. Beyond its maritime legacy, Marseille is renowned for its stunning coastal landscapes, including the Calanques National Park, a rugged and picturesque series of limestone cliffs and coves that attract nature enthusiasts and hikers.
In recent times, Marseille has also gained attention for its contemporary art scene, vibrant music festivals, and diverse neighborhoods that showcase the multicultural fabric of the city. As a dynamic urban center with a captivating history, Marseille continues to draw visitors and residents alike with its unique blend of tradition and modernity.
